Welcome to the Senior section of The Gap FC.

Our section is focussed on building a strong presence within the Football Brisbane competition structure and ensuring we have player and coach pathways for our junior and youth players into senior male and female football. Each of our senior teams exists for a specific purpose and Player pathways – a clear way forward explains this in more detail.

Following a recent restructure of our sections, we have incorporated the following programs into the Senior section:

  • Brisbane Premier League program – this comprises our men's First Team and our BPL Reserves team
  • City league program – this is split into male and female competitions and then further into social and high-performance teams
  • U18 and U20 program – this is split into social and high-performance teams

We have already begun to see the benefits of our 2019–2021 strategy with greater collaboration across the many teams within our junior and senior sections. A significant success in 2019 was the restructure of our BPL teams and the recruitment of new players as well as the retention of key members of our 2018 squad. Whilst we have been pleased with the results and our league position, it is the camaraderie, commitment, and determination to achieve that has been the real success of both the First Team and Reserves. There is a very real positivity and a demonstrable willingness to embrace and help the younger players making their transition to senior football. Another great achievement has been the movement through our pathway of players as demonstrated by the many Under 18 players making their debut in First team, Reserves’ and City football.

A strong football philosophy and playing style, driven by our Technical Director and Head Coach Mark Strickland, is being embedded throughout our senior high-performance teams. This, coupled with an influx of new players for the 2019 season, has seen a greater sense of commitment and desire to achieve over the longer term.

After two years as our Reserves’ coach we are saying goodbye to Michael Aust, due to his work commitments, and we wish him all the best for the future. Michael has played a key role in supporting the promotion of our younger players and aiding and supporting our First Team. He has guided the Reserves through a challenging year as we transitioned to the new strategic direction and purpose, whilst remaining focussed on achieving success on and off the field. His passion for football and our Club is unquestionable and he will be missed.

Our Under 18s program went through a step change in 2019 as we expanded to four teams and introduced a mixed team into our social program. There have been highlights, challenges and mixed success across the board, however, we have now established a strong foundation to build upon and we are already seeing unprecedented interest in joining our Club in 2020. Over the coming months we will consider how best to meet the needs of existing and new players transitioning out of Under 18 football into senior football and as part of that we will look at the potential opportunity of Football Brisbane’s Under 20 competition.

We have seen many female players contribute their time, energy and skill in support of the Under 18 Division 4 team and this is one of the many reasons we moved the City Women's teams in to the senior structure. We will now focus on building a strong pathway for female players, who do not wish to or unable to be part of the NPL program, from squirts to the highest level of football we can within the Football Brisbane competition structure. We have many talented young female players coming up through the junior and youth programs and we want to ensure they have a senior team they can play in that delivers the level of challenge they want.

Each season we will build upon the last and continually strive to do better at all levels of our football programs and the administration aspects of our Section.
