Tuesday 21st June saw our U18 FQPL Development squad head down the Gold Coast to take on Magic United and come away with a nil-all draw. Due to all the chaos weather has caused in recent times, this was the team's fifth game in only 17 days.
The squad comprising of 17 players was reduced to ten on the night due mainly to injury and illness. Despite starting the game a man down, which with cramps and knocks during the game saw us reduced to nine at times, the team played on. With six subs on the opposition bench, this could have easily impacted the team’s mentality going into the game.
Coach Mark Strickland spoke before the game about playing two tight banks of four and five, not pressing, which is against the team philosophy, and allowing the opposition the ball in their back line and out wide. The team completed those tasks with a level of confidence and determination in trying circumstances. The commanding and resilient performance saw The Gap create opportunities and there were a few times in the second half we were unlucky not to score. The ten lads stood committed to their mates for the full 90 minutes and not once did their dogged determination falter.
Coach Mark provided this reflection on the game: “During the long drive home, I reflected on my experiences as a coach and player. I’ve been involved in grand final-winning teams, league-winning teams, National championships, and even coached the National Defence team in Europe. I am underestimating when I say I’ve been involved in over 1500 games, and I do not recall a team showing such togetherness and determination; well done men, so very proud to be your coach this year.”
