Season 2020 update

By Juniors Editor on

Normally at this time of the year, we would be waist-deep in football, with every weekend bringing another batch of excitement and entertainment. Unfortunately, this year is far from every other year we have experienced. As the weeks stretch on since our last competitive games, we thought it important to give you an update on where we are at, and what the expectations are going forward for 2020 and beyond. We would love to have a big list of answers to all of our questions, but answers are really hard to find at the moment.

So what is the plan for 2020? Well, we can tell you that there are many plans that have been thought through by our governing bodies in conjunction with the clubs. The challenge of these is that nothing can be put in place until we have a clear date from the government on when social distancing requirements will ease, and we seem a distance from that at the moment. We know nothing will happen prior to the end of May from the current FFA directives, but it is possible this may be extended. Our governing bodies are still looking to complete this season, but what that looks like will be unknown until we get a start date, which obviously we would be shouting from the rooftops when we get it!

A concern from many members has been how the club will survive financially through this period. The board has been going through our budgets very carefully over the last month to assess the overall impacts and options going forward, which are greatly complicated by us not knowing what the 2020 season looks like. The club has significant costs to manage, a number of which have not changed despite our game stopping. We are closely monitoring all government assistance packages to ensure these are applied to the club and will be looking to ensure your club comes out the other side of this challenging season ready for you to reconnect with the people and game that you love.

The Gap FC has a deep connection with the history of this area, and we are committed to making sure that the community activities that you love are there for you when we emerge from our worlds of social isolation. Whilst we don’t have many answers for you at the moment, we want all of our members to know that we miss seeing you, and look forward to being together on the fields again soon.

Any important information received will be issued via email and our social channels, and we will look to do a monthly update similar to this that covers what we know (and don’t know) to keep you aware of the current progress of our journey. This experience has reinforced to many of us the power of our community, and the importance of our club and its members. We thank you for your patience as we work through all of the aspects of this issue and wish you and your families all the best through these trying times.

Should you have any specific questions on any issue, please direct these to secretary@gapfootball.org.au.
