Today is probably the proudest day in the recent history of The Gap football club.

Last night’s results mean the men’s first team has won automatic promotion to the men’s premier division one – one step down from the top men’s division in Brisbane.

They have achieved this with a remarkable run of six successive victories and a hatful of goals, culminating in last night’s 4-0 victory over Bayside United.

The club’s sincerest congratulations are due to coach Gerry McAvoy. Gerry has not only turned around the fortunes of the club on the field, but his professional approach and influence has resulted in the emergence of a new culture at the club.

Gerry himself has put an enormous amount of effort into the campaigns of the men’s first team over the two seasons he has been with us. We are grateful for this and look forward to working with Gerry in coming seasons to build on this foundation.

Of course, all the preparation in the world is near worthless unless the players go out and play, so the club’s congratulations also go to the players who have earned the club promotion with their performances this season.

Finally, there are many people who work hard behind the scenes to help get the senior men on the park each weekend. There are too many of them to list here, and I would almost certainly leave someone out. So it’s a collective thanks for you.

So, we look forward with confidence to The Gap returning to division one next season, to a better quality of football at Walton Bridge Reserve, and to continued success for our senior men.
